Microsoft announced the new agreements as a way of showing how its office application creates Internet-ready documents. The office applications are all compatible with the standard Web computing language -- hypertext markup language (HTML). Microsoft Office Vice President Steven Sinofsky said in San Francisco that Microsoft would make addtional third party agreements such as those with Verio and Concentric to host office applications. "We'll partner with a broad range of these companies," Sinofsky said. The new Office 2000 software includes applications that are widely used by large and small businesses, including Microsoft Word, for word processing, and Excel, for number crunching. On top of those basic functions, Microsoft has built a wide range of related office-oriented software ranging from its widely-used PowerPoint, for making presentations to forms for letters.
