Unfortunately, Mike, I know not what lurks in the minds of mortal Adtraners. But taking an educated guess, it appears their HDSL2 (as opposed to regular HDSL) reduces the pair count needed to provide the service. As regular HDSL is targeted at business due to its symmetrical bandwidth structure, as opposed to ADSL which provides asymmetrical bandwidth more suited to residential use and Web surfing, I would say HDSL2 is still targeted at business, but reducing the pair count requirements by half (an incredible savings for ILEC and CLEC apiece) and maintaining the symmetrical bandwidth that business needs.

Then their new offering MDSL would be targeting residential to take the distance limitation of traditional ADSL or RADSL away, offering service up to 30,000 feet from the CO which is phenomenal and allows ILECS, CLECS, ISPs the ability to reach many more potential customers than with normal ADSL. Since it is so new and the announcement just came out, they probably haven't had a chance to walk the new info over to the Webmaster to upload yet. Or they are waiting for the scheduled up date (many companies have policy to update once a month or every 2 months with new information). I wouldn't read too much into the fact that it's not on their web site. If you are really crazy for more info on it I would call directly or email direct for more information and not wait on the web (no pun intended).

Hi Mike:

Re MDSL: late in 1998 Level One Communications released a
MDSL chip. They have a white paper at:

level1.com

The document you want is ''Using Multi-Rate DSL to Expand
Digital Services Via Existing Phone Lines''

The white paper mentions the ability to reach subscribers
at 22,000ft from the CO. Maybe Adtran is getting its MDSL
chips from another vendor, or maybe the white paper was too conservative.

Best regards,

Bernard Levy
