Don - The only reference I have for this problem is this article from the San Diego Union-Tribune: (I'm copying this here because you might not be able to access the URL. You have to be registered.) Q&A with Andy Rathbone If your computer freezes up, check maker's Web site for BIOS Andy Rathbone Andy Rathbone is the best-selling author of the "Windows for Dummies" series. 01-Jun-1999 Tuesday Q: At least once a day, and sometimes several times a day, my five-month-old Toshiba laptop freezes -- locks up completely -- while I'm using Windows 98. It freezes in various programs, ranging from Word to my Internet browser. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete does nothing. I always need to restart the computer to start over. How can I fix this? MARCIA SAGE San Diego A: Marcia Sage wrote back with her own solution a short time later, worth printing for anyone with a computer that "locks up" or freezes in the middle of a program. "I contacted Toshiba, who explained that the 'hang' my computer experiences is the result of an incompatibility between Windows 98 and Toshiba's BIOS. I downloaded and installed an updated BIOS from Toshiba's Web site, and now I've gone 24 hours without a freeze! Looks like updating the BIOS did the trick." The moral to Marcia's story? If your computer's freezing under Windows 98, head to its manufacturer's Web site and make sure your computer has the latest BIOS. Short for Basic In Out System, the BIOS serves as the translator between your computer and its components. Windows talks to the BIOS, which then passes those requests to the computer's parts. To find out the version of your BIOS, watch your computer's screen as it boots up. The BIOS version number usually appears right after the video card's version number. Then compare your BIOS version with the downloadable version available on the manufacturer's Web site. If the Web site offers a newer BIOS, download it. The new BIOS usually comes in a program; running the program automatically updates the BIOS and restarts the computer.
