"Your return on cash would of course be 285%, but not on your equity."

Since when is buying power equity? If you want to go full margin, I say 200% is the max you can make on a short. I may have a maintenance level of 35 or 30%, but I can't short more than twice my money.

Basically, all I care about is overall portfolio return, and risk mitigation. Since I see the market as severely overpriced, it makes sense to balance the long side of my port with shorts. I know, I know, the market will never go down. But if it does the garbage I short will collapse. Those folks who think only of 300 and 400% returns won't be hedged. Oh well.
