Washington, DC, Jun. 07, 1999 (The Content Factory via COMTEX) --
Onebox.com of San Mateo, Calif., said it's raised additional venture
capital funding and linked with ZDnet (ZDZ) for distribution of its
universal messaging service. Backing is coming from Brentwood Venture
Capital and IVP, raising the total amount of capital to nearly $20
million. ZDnet also intends to invest $1 million in Onebox.com and to
make the company its exclusive provider of e-mail, voice, paging and
fax services. Onebox.com President Ross Bott told CBS.MarketWatch.com
he expects to partner with other Web site operators, too. Users who
register will be given a local telephone number and an e-mail address
for messages.

The basic services will be free, but Bott said additional features
will be added, some priced at $5 a month. Onebox.com will convert voice
messages to text that can be read on the Web and vice versa; text
messages can be turned into audio to be picked up on the phone. Bott
said the company has three patents pending on processes to reduce the
likelihood of the company "losing an enormous amount of money by giving
(services) away." Bott said Onebox.com hopes to generate revenue
through sponsorship of services and advertising, too.
