RSA Extends Lead in Java Security Race with BSAFE
SSL-J 2.1 Software

PR Newswire - June 08, 1999 07:16

New Transaction Layer Security (TLS) Developer's Kit Joins Crypto-J for One-Stop Java
Security

SAN MATEO, Calif., June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- RSA Data Security, Inc., a wholly owned
subsidiary of Security Dynamics Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: SDTI) today reinforced its
position as a leader in Java(TM) security by introducing BSAFE(R) SSL-J 2.1, the first
Java-based Transaction Layer Security (TLS) protocol developer's kit offering trusted RSA
encryption. Designed to provide transaction privacy, integrity and authentication, this latest
version of BSAFE SSL-J software is intended to give developers the components they need to
build secure Java client/server applications that are protected from eavesdropping, tampering,
or message forgery when communicating over the Internet.

Available now, RSA's BSAFE SSL-J 2.1 developer's product provides an integrated, tested
package of encryption and TLS protocol components, including the full suite of RSA(TM)
algorithms, for securing a wide range of commercial and consumer e-commerce applications
used in banking, financial services, retailing, Web publishing, government and other markets.
Together with the recently announced BSAFE Crypto-J 2.2 software, BSAFE SSL-J software
is designed to give developers a single source for all their Java security needs when creating
Java applications.

"Today's announcement reinforces RSA's ongoing commitment to expand and enhance its Java
security offerings and provide developers with one-stop shopping for all their Java security
needs," said Scott Schnell, senior vice president of marketing for RSA and Security Dynamics
Technologies, Inc. "With these new Java-based products, RSA is delivering proven security
products from trusted experts to the Java developer community."

RSA's BSAFE Crypto-J 2.2 product, which features full Intel Random Number Generator
support, is designed to increase user's security through the use of strong, truly random numbers.
In addition, the BSAFE Crypto-J 2.2 product is "bytecode obfuscatable" which is useful for
applications seeking US export approval. The new BSAFE SSL-J protocol components are
designed to help developers strengthen the security of their Java applications and build them
more quickly and easily, while getting all their Java security components from the industry's
leading name in cryptography.

BSAFE SSL-J

RSA's BSAFE SSL-J product is fully compliant with the IETF's Transaction Layer Security
protocol version 1.0 specification (RFC 2246), and is intended to include everything needed to
meet developers' security protocol requirements within their Java environments. This includes
extensive sample code, API libraries, certificate authority components, a wide range of socket
libraries, full user and API documentation plus other important features that help developers
create secure applications quickly and more cost-effectively. Building on RSA's BSAFE
Crypto-J development product, BSAFE SSL-J 2.1 software is designed to provide: -- A
comprehensive packaged security component solution that is fully compliant with TLS v1.0,
intended to provide developers a high degree of interoperability in their products. -- Enhanced
certificate management, improved authentication and additional error-alerting capabilities. --
X.509 v1 and v3 digital certificate support, with sample code, for server and client
authentication and verifications, intended to provide interoperability with Netscape, Microsoft
and VeriSign certificate schemes. -- High performance through session ID caching, blocking
and non-blocking I/O and support for hardware accelerators and multithreaded processing. --
Simplified debugging through a sophisticated error reporting system. -- Support for the most
widely used operating systems and CPUs, including Windows, Solaris, UNIX and Linux.

Transaction Layer Security

The Transaction Layer Security protocol is an improved and standardized version of Secure
Sockets Layer (SSL), the de facto Internet protocol for session-based encryption and
authentication. The result of efforts by the IETF, TLS is a general-purpose protocol for
providing a secure communications channel between two parties with server and client
authentication, application interoperability, improved performance and an extensible framework
for incorporating new encryption and authentication technologies as needed.

TLS is currently supported by all major Web browsers and servers, and is used by many
industry-leading software and hardware companies to incorporate secure communications
within their applications. Users of TLS include business, government and services development
organizations and independent software vendors (ISVs) for creating a wide variety of
applications requiring communications security, including electronic commerce and financial
transactions, electronic data interchange, LDAP directory services, database connectivity,
groupware and collaborative applications, terminal emulation and many others.

BSAFE Crypto-J

RSA's BSAFE Crypto-J product is RSA Data Security's first cryptographic software designed
specifically for Java developers. Written completely in Java, Crypto-J software is designed to
provide developers with a state-of-the-art implementation of the most important privacy,
authentication, and data integrity routines, and is compatible with Javasoft's and Sun's JDK 1.1
and higher. Crypto-J is a Java Security Package, and was designed to be called either through
the Java Security API or directly through Crypto-J's API.

Pricing and Availability

Software development kits for the BSAFE SSL-J 2.1 and BSAFE Crypto-J 2.2 products are
available now for $295. Runtime licenses for products and support using BSAFE SSL-J 2.1
and BSAFE Crypto-J 2.2 software are available on a royalty, per-seat or annual fee basis.
