Mike,

I read the Mattel article too. Some interesting observations:

1. Said something like the average customer had 8 Barbies recently. Similar to Nike's high concentration of shoes/customer at one point for Nike. How many shoes or barbies does someone need.

2. The article indicates that collectors have lost interest because of the high volumes of Holiday Barbie. This is significant and reminds somewhat of the boom bust in baseball cards. Topps/Fleer/Donruss and the others started flooding the market with collectibles in the mid-80s and so many collectors simply stopped buying. The collector card companies suffered due to this and I don't know that baseball cards have recovered even today. Sounds like Barbie collectors feel burned and it'll take alot to get them back.

BTW, congrats on the strong performance of your "valuestocks" portfolio.

Shane

She's had a rough time as CEO, and she is not my favorite CEO in the world. But for the job of marketing toys there is nobody better in the world. The negatives on Jill Barad in the Journal article today are old news and exactly what I would expect to be reading if the stock is at its bottom. I think you know better than to react to a front page story on a stock that is already off 40%.
