Let's see...I have been to LA...My sister- in- law used to live in Marina del Rey, and we walked to Venice from her place, then along the boardwalk. I like the festivity of boardwalks, their tacky, populist charm. Venice is somewhat rundown, of course, but there were still a reasonable number of upscale bars amid the t- shirt shops, and so we alit in one for the obligatory beer (I think I had one, just for the occasion). Skateboarders passed, as my sister- in- law told a maudlin story about her ex- husband's childhood, and I thought, "Oh no, he still has his hooks into her"...They had been divorced for years, and he had been a terrible cad, but she started crying on cue anyway...We left the bar, and I wondered if anyone ever gets free of his/her past. The Pacific gleamed in the background, but I had a faint sense of unease, because I could tell that everything was turned around, and it was on my right as we walked north...
