Candace and Thread,

Take a look at page D6 of the NY Times today. There has been a series of ads identical to today's which have highlighted the newest color PDA's including the Cassiopeia E-100 and the Compaq Aero. It appears as if Microsoft is footing the bill for part of these gigantic, color advertisements in an attempt to "deep six" the Palm offerings.

Why is 3COM so secretive about newer generations of palmtop devices with regard to a color screen and consideration for multimedia applications? It would be nice to have 3COM or Psion mount a charge so that the consumer has a choice down the road. I hate to say it, but I think the gray scale screens are going to be unattractive to the average consumer faced with a palmtop purchase decision in the next 1 to 2 years. Also, vertical markets served by Intermec, Symbol, Telxon and the like are heading toward WinCE.

I think that Palm has to increase multimedia function and add an expansion slot for memory upgrades and additional functionality to be competitive. The palmtop market is heading for multimedia function in addition to basic PIM functions.
