Thinking about this announcement: my initial reaction was that this would be a negative for Ashton, and it is to the extent that any speculation that MER or GS was interested in buying the company, is no longer relevant. However, on the upside, this announcement: 1) Legitimizes the whole concept for ATSs; 2) Continues to put pressure on NYSE for an after-hours solution; 3) Gives other large institutions more reason to get into the game; 4) Ashton has the clear lead; 5) Ashton is also poised to serve foreign markets After my emotions (fear) dissipated a bit, I came back to the realization that Fred & Co. will make VTS fly and the future is as bright as ever, if not a little brighter!
