Interspeed and Cabletron Systems Enter Into Worldwide Reseller Agreement for High-Speed In-Building DSL Services Delivery

Cabletron to Feature Interspeed's System 500 as Key Component

of Integrated DSL Solution For MTU Environments

ATLANTA, June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- At the SuperComm '99 show here, Interspeed, Inc., a Brooktrout company (Nasdaq: BRKT), and Cabletron Systems (NYSE: CS) today announced a strategic partnership that calls for Cabletron to resell and support Interspeed's System 500 Digital Subscriber Line Access Routers (DSLARs) to its worldwide customers in the Multi-Tenant Unit (MTU) market. Cabletron will resell Interspeed's System 500 DSL hardware platform through its direct sales force and channel partners. The announcement underscores both companies' efforts to deliver high-speed Internet access solutions to value-added resellers (VARs), Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLEC) targeting multi-tenant properties.

MTUs include office buildings or campuses with multiple business tenants, hotels, college dormitories and medical facilities. By providing high-speed data access to tenants from a single point of service, Cabletron and Interspeed intend to enable MTU owners to expand their growth opportunities and eliminate surcharge payments by individual businesses or tenants to the local loop provider for access to the Internet or other corporate offices. Interspeed's System 500 is designed to sit in the wiring closet of an MTU facility to deliver high-speed Internet access to individual units within the building.

Under the agreement, Cabletron will resell Interspeed's System 500 platform, which delivers high speed Internet access over existing copper telephone lines. With the Interspeed platform, Cabletron is able to provide an end to end DSL solution while also supporting traditional LAN/WAN interfaces via the SmartSmitch Router 200/500/2000 series of Application-Aware Routers.

"Our agreement with Interspeed allows Cabletron to supplement its rich network access and communications solutions by integrating in a single box all the components required to offer DSL services," said P.G. Menon, Senior Director of Product Management at Cabletron.. "When used in conjunction with the world's number one CPE router, we believe that Interspeed's System 500 can help our customers reduce the cost and complexity of delivering Internet access services using standards-based DSL for MTU applications."

"Cabletron is a proven leader in delivering high performance, reliable wide-area networking solutions to the enterprise and, as a result, is an ideal partner for Interspeed," said Chris Whalen, vice president of sales and marketing, Interspeed. "By partnering with Interspeed, Cabletron is able to provide its service provider customers with advanced DSL enabling solutions designed specifically to meet the growing market demand for in-building, high- speed Internet access."

The Cabletron/Interspeed solution for customer premise equipment will include:

-- Interspeed's System 500 Platform: Most DSL offerings today require

multiple pieces of equipment to create a service solution, including

modems, multiplexors, DSLAMs, switches and routers. Interspeed's

System 500 integrates DSL aggregation, Layer 3 switching, IP Routing

and VPN capabilities in a single chassis. No additional equipment is

required to offer a DSL service. The System 500 multi-gigabit

backplane provides a scalable architecture that enables Interspeed to

build high density line modules with multiple ports . The System 500

provides the same functionality in a 16 port In-Building/Campus

installation as a 192 port CLEC or ISP service offering. The System

500 also includes Speedviewa, a powerful set of administration and

management functions. Speedview is a management interface that uses

an embedded, secure http server that enables complete system

management and configuration from a standard Web browser. A text- based command line interface is also available. Interspeed conforms

to the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to support dedicated

network management software platforms.

-- Cabletron's FlowPoint 2200 CPE DSL router seamlessly combines a DSL

modem and a full router into a single, intuitive device that provides

high-speed access to an entire local area network (LAN) while

supporting advanced VPN and firewall security features. The FlowPoint

2200-16 SDSL Router provides users with high-speed symmetrical data

rates for advanced applications such as streaming video and audio

videoconferencing, and distance learning. The product can be installed

in minutes and provides easy configuration with built-in NAT and DHCP

servers and "Quick Start" software. The DHCP server automatically

assigns the workstation's IP address, mask, default gateway and DNS

server addresses. This allows LAN-based workstations to get their

network addressing information from a wide area network (WAN) without

any user setup at the workstation.

-- Cabletron's SmartSwitch Router is an industry-leading application- aware desktop enterprise switch that offers wire-speed application- level control by switching packets at Layers 2, 3 and 4, and supports

a full array of Wide Area Network (WAN) interfaces. Offering the most

compelling price/performance solution in the industry, all members of

the SmartSwitch Router family (8000, 8600 and 2000), support

10/100/1000 switching and IP & IPX routing at Layers 2, 3 and 4 and

are standards compliant -- including 802.1p, 802.1q, RIP, OSPF, BGP,

RMON and RMON2. Additionally, the SSR's switch Layer 4 application

flows providing application-level control, Quality of Service (QoS),

security and accounting of network traffic. All members of the SSR

family also support WAN interfaces at various speeds.
