Kevin, Lest you forget, most of our inventions were invented by that most prolific of inventors, Regus Patoff. He was a Russian of course.
It is of note that the Russians were always at the front of the line to get copies of new US patents...I wonder why?
Not to belittle the Russians they are smart and well educated in math, science and engineering and if they ever get their act together have the ability to be formidable competitors.
The Russian system makes every younger Russian into a market entrepreneur, and they would scrounge, buy/sell, whatever they could to extend their meager state earnings. When they come here the younger ones usually land on their feet, running. Older ones have problems unless they are educated.
One group of Russians that came here bought some old vacuum equipment from a scrapyard and started putting titanium nitride on drill bits and other cutting parts, now they are all rich. It turns out they were in a lab in Russia that did this for the military. Far ahead of what we did here in Canada. They could have patented many of their methods, but they thought it was public domain, now it is too late. They were in the lab that also started diamond film from plasma and they are currently perfecting diamond coatings for edges of razor blades. Current blades of stainless steel last for 2 weeks or so. Imagine a blade good for 1 year? Currently the coating is too draggy for most people(pulls) but in a year or two they may well shake the market. I am sure that Schick, Wilkinson etc have their own projects in this area.
