Newbridge Networks Joins With Other Industry Leaders to Demonstrate Interoperable, Standards-Based G.lite ADSL ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 8, 1999-- Newbridge Key Participant in Universal ADSL Working Group G.lite Interoperability Showcase at Supercomm'99 Newbridge Networks (NYSE:NN)(TSE:NNC) today announced that the Company is joining other major digital subscriber line (xDSL) suppliers in the G.lite Interoperability Showcase being held by the Universal ADSL Working Group (UAWG) -- a consortium of more than 30 personal computer (PC), networking and telecommunications industry leaders -- at Supercomm'99. The G.lite Interoperability Showcase demonstrates the capability, compatibility and commercial availability of the industry's most innovative G.lite asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) products and services. G.lite is the standards-based, cost effective, consumer version of ADSL access technology adopted as a worldwide standard by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). The availability of interoperable, standards-based G.lite ADSL products will enable service providers to deliver affordable, high speed broadband Internet access, using standard telephone lines, to millions of consumers worldwide. "Interoperability is critical in ensuring that customers are able to obtain equipment from vendors and retailers without concerns over compatibility," said John Cahill, UAWG co-chair and executive director, BellSouth Advanced Networking. "This is a significant industry victory and UAWG members are to be congratulated for the truly remarkable efforts that enabled us to accelerate the development of G.lite ADSL." UAWG was formed to spur the widespread adoption and availability of high speed digital Internet access for the mass market. It has successfully extended the present American National Standards Institute (ANSI) T1.413 standard to ensure the rapid deployment and adoption of G.lite ADSL and ensured equipment interoperability among all participants. G.lite ADSL delivers service providers with a spliterless, cost effective solution for home high speed network access, providing "always on" connections and simultaneous voice and data transmissions -- up to 30 times faster than the current highest speed analog modem technology of 56kb/s -- using standard telephone lines. Using G.lite ADSL to maximize bandwidth efficiency enables service providers to deliver premium quality, interactive multimedia applications, such as multi-player gaming, teleworking services, video catalogs, home shopping and multimedia access. The Newbridge(R) G.lite ADSL solution uses the Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress(TM) 36170 Multiservices Switch, equipped with the Analog Devices AD20msp918 chip set. Co-developed with Aware, Inc., the standards-compliant chip set supports asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) interfacing capability for increased data rates. The MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switch, equipped with ATM/ADSL line cards, is located at the central office while customer homes are equipped with G.lite ADSL modems. The Newbridge MainStreetXpress Service Subscription Manager provides dynamic user service selection management software as well as network and service management software. The Newbridge service subscription management software and G.lite ADSL solution enable customers to dynamically select content provider services and operate with a flexible management model where activities, such as provisioning, billing and line maintenance, can be partially or fully partitioned to meet user demand. "Newbridge is a strong supporter of G.lite, recognizing that this technology is crucial to making high speed Internet as prevalent as basic phone service," said Conrad Lewis, executive vice president, Access Products Group, Newbridge Networks. "Over 35 service providers worldwide now use the Newbridge broadband xDSL solutions and we've already recognized tremendous market potential through field trials of our G.lite solution in the networks of several carriers who want to mass deploy high speed Internet services. Newbridge will continue to work with the ADSL Forum to facilitate the deployment of G.lite ADSL." Following Supercomm'99, UAWG will transition ongoing work to the ADSL Forum to continue efforts in developing a true open-market environment for ADSL, while delivering the benefits of this technology to millions of end customers around the world. The ADSL Forum is a non-profit international organization of over 300 companies representing the world's computer, networking and telecommunications industries. It is dedicated to the development and mass-market deployment of broadband communications technologies based on DSL over existing copper telephone cable infrastructures. The UAWG Interoperability Showcase is being demonstrated at Supercomm'99 in Atlanta, Georgia, June 8-10, 1999 in Hall A, booth No. 52. The Newbridge portfolio of xDSL-based solutions is being demonstrated in the Newbridge booth, No. 7715, in Hall H.
