News June 8, 08:37 Eastern Time
ATLANTA, Jun 8, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE via COMTEX) -- FlowPoint Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cabletron Systems (NYSE: CS) and a leader in DSL customer premises equipment, today announced that the Cabletron SmartSwitch Router (SSR250) now supports both the consumer-focused universal Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line standard (ADSL-G.lite) as well as the full-rate standard (ADSL-G.DMT).

The Cabletron SSR250 ADSL Router provides Network Service Providers, Internet Service Providers, and end users with a wide range of broadband access options. It utilizes Alcatel's DynaMiTe DMT ADSL Issue 2-compliant chipset and firmware for modem-side functionality. This ensures full interoperability between the Cabletron router and carrier-class DSL Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) equipment from multiple vendors, including Alcatel, Cisco, Ericsson, NEC, Nortel, and Siemens.

The Cabletron SSR250 ADSL Router will be featured in the G.lite Interoperability Showcase hosted by the Universal ADSL Working Group (UAWG) and ADSL Forum at SuperComm99 (Atlanta GA, June 8-10). Over 30 companies will participate in the Interoperability Showcase and demonstrate the commercial readiness of the G.lite standard. The event is expected to help pave the way for mass deployment of broadband Internet access.

"The Cabletron SSR250 is interoperable with the full-rate G.DMT equipment from every other ADSL vendor in the networking market," said Chuck Waggoner, president of FlowPoint. "The Cabletron router has also passed G.lite interoperability tests with major ADSL vendors. This product provides enormous flexibility to NSP and ISPs as they rollout different services to specific markets. It will also benefit end users by allowing them to select different access speed plans as they become available across the country."

Cabletron SSR250 ADSL-DMT/G.lite Router The Cabletron SSR250 Router utilizes Alcatel Microelectronic's DynaMiTe ADSL modem chipset to provide high-speed data rates up to 8Mbps downstream to a workstation and 640Kbps upstream over a single pair of copper lines. The router is designed for high-speed remote access to the Internet and corporate resources. It is targeted at small businesses with up to 100 users where multiple workstations and workers require simultaneous high-speed remote access to the Internet, corporate resources, and interactive applications such as video conferencing, streaming video, and distance learning.

Powerful Routing/Bridging Features All Cabletron/FlowPoint routers include a set of high-performance routing and bridging features, providing compatibility with the protocols most commonly used in the Internet and corporate Intranets. This includes TCP/IP Routing supporting RIP and RIP2, Novell IPX Routing, IEEE Bridging, SNMP Network Management, and Security Features.

Plug & Play features designed to get users connected quickly and reduce service costs include Dynamic IP Address Assignment with a built-in DHCP Server. The FlowPoint version of Network Address Translation (NAT) allows multiple servers on a LAN (web, ftp, mail, etc.) to operate while NAT is engaged.

Optional Embedded Firewall and Virtual Private Network FlowPoint has recently added optional Firewall and Virtual Private Networking software packages to its family of remote access routers. The FlowPoint Firewall and VPN are embedded systems that operate in the kernel of the router. The FlowPoint VPN software includes L2TP Tunneling, 56-bit DES Encryption, and Diffie-Hellman key exchange. The FlowPoint Firewall and VPN are sold as an optional software upgrade and are controlled by a software-loaded key that activates the hardware.

Pricing and Availability The Cabletron SSR250 ADSL Router is available through Cabletron Systems (www.cabletron.com) and FlowPoint (www.flowpoint.com) for a suggested retail price of $649.
