President honours language scholars

NEW DELHI, JUNE 7. Twenty-two scholars,including two women, were honoured by the President, Mr. K. R. Narayanan, today for their contribution to the growth of ancient languages.

Mr. Narayanan presented the Certificates of Honour to 15 Sanskrit scholars, three scholars each in Arabic and Persian and one in Pali/Prakrit.

Among those present at the function, held in Rashtrapati Bhavan, were the Vice-President, Mr. Krishan Kant, the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee, the former President, Dr.Shankar Dayal Sharma, the former Prime Minister, Mr. I. K. Gujral, the Congress(I) president, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, and senior Government officials.

The recipients of Certificates of Honour were Dr. C. Srinivasa Sastrigal, Prof. Hemanta Kumar Ganguli, Devrishi Kalanath Shastri, Pandit Kalyan Datt Sharma, Prof. Koshalya Walli, Martand Chidambar Dixit, Dr. Neelamperoor Sukumaran, Pandit Parasuram Ghanapathi, Dr. Ramyatna Shukla, Prof. Sureshchandra Govindlal Kantawala, Acharya
Shaligram, Prof. Shiv Sheikhar Misra, Acharya Shobhakant Jayadev Jha, late Acharya Sripada Subrahmanya Ghanapati and Pt. Waman Balkrishna Bhagwat.

Those honoured for Arabic language are Prof. Mohammad Rahatullah, Dr. Mohammad Sultan Mohiuddin and Prof. Syed Ziaul Hasan Nadvi. Prof. Pritam Singh, Dr. Syed Mohd Fida Abbas Rizvi and Dr. Zaibunnisa Begum were honoured for their contribution in promoting Persian while Prof. Heramba Nath Chatterjee Sastri was presented the certificate for promotion of Pali/Prakrit language.

Mr. Hemanta Kumar Ganguli was not present at the function and late Acharya Ghanapati's award was received by his wife. Dr. Koshalya Walli is the first scholar to have received the D.Litt degree from Jammu University. Dr. Zaibunnisa Begum has obtained the doctoral degrees in Urdu and Persian and has published about 60 papers apart from three books.

The award carries a cash component of Rs. 20,000 annually for life, a citation and a shawl.
