I don't know if the combination was deadly for AOL. It will be. AOL insists on running all of its transactions and such through its own servers. AOL can not possibly keep up with the capital demands for infrastructure that the coming bandwidth boom will force (think of all the bandwidth and processing power needed if AOL continues on its growth trajectory then multiply that by ~400% per year to account for coming bandwidth-intensive applications). Centralizing processing is a sure way for a content company to loose itself in the abyss. It is already becoming difficult for a company to do both content and connectivity/processing well. If AOL does not decentralize, it will fail. Again this is only an opinion. Please do not attack me personally. I have no interest in arguing, only expressing my opinion.
