DELL, EXCITE AND BT TO OFFER FREE EUROPEAN INTERNET ACCESS FOR ALL WITH LAUNCH OF DELLNET SERVICE Blacknell, UK, June 8 -- Dell Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), part of Dell Computer Corporation, the world's leading direct computer systems company, today announced the launch of DELLNET, an easy-to-use, pan-European, free Internet service. The DellNet service offers unlimited free access to the Internet with fast, reliable connection, free e-mail address and a customizable home page with news and information channels. There is no registration or set-up and monthly connection fees to pay, just the local call charges for time spent online. ''The DellNet Service simply provides the most easy-to-use and hassle-free way of connection to the Internet, whether you are a first time user or already have an existing provider. A simple download from the relevant DellNet website provides immediate access with no need for installation or registration'' said Jan Gesmar-Larsen, President, Dell Europe, Middle East and Africa. The DellNet service will also be pre-installed on Dell's award-winning Dimension PCs with Windows98, Dell's performance desktop line for home and small business customers. To get online, users simply click on the DellNet icon on their desktop and a browser will open displaying the DellNet home page. As part of the DellNet service, users also receive a free email address and access to a fully-featured web portal capability, supplied using Excite's quality Internet services including favorite online channels, information, news and useful links to sites across Europe. Users can customize the DellNet homepage to their individual taste using Excite's advanced personalization capabilities to change content and layout to suit their interests. The DellNet site also offers users the ability to create their own web community where they can share information and discussion with family and friends. DellNet was created as a result of the company's agreement with British Telecommunications plc (BT) and Excite. The agreement provides an integration of telecommunications and computing that makes it easy for users to get online and use the world-wide web. The DellNet service uses software from BT and its partners and European ISP networks to connect customers to the Internet and Excite's search engine and portal technology to provide easy navigation and access to information on the web. DellNet has initially been launched in the UK, France and Germany and will be implemented in other European countries during this year. Each country has their own DellNet web site to offer localized information and news and provide a means to download the necessary software for Internet access. UK DellNet is live today and can be found: www.DellNet.co.uk.Error! Reference source not found. will be available from 21st June and www.DellNet.com/fr will be available within the next month. ''The European Internet access market is changing and we are delighted to maximize this innovation with BT and Excite to offer free Internet access on a pan-European basis and a comprehensive service to all users of the Internet'' commented Gesmar-Larsen. ''In keeping with our direct model, DellNet enables us to provide the best online customer experience with reliable, easy Internet access.'' Commenting on the announcement, Evan Rudowski, General Manager of Excite UK, said, ''Major brands like Dell are realizing the importance of offering their customers a compelling and localized Internet experience. Serving up the best of what's on the Web in a personalisable and easy to use format direct from an icon on the desktop enables Dell to add another layer of value to its customer service proposition, thus maintaining its competitive edge.'' John Swingewood, Director, BT Internet and Multimedia, said: ''We are delighted that Dell has chosen BT to power its pan-European Dellnet service. BT has already demonstrated its ability and the reliability of its Internet access products in no uncertain terms and this was clearly a major factor in Dell's decision to work with us. ''Our significant investment in European network infrastructure enables us to take the expertise we have gained in UK to the European market so that companies like Dell are able to participate in compelling and simple to use Internet access across a very wide market.'' A leader in e-commerce, Dell EMEA recently announced its online sales had risen to $4 million a day in the first quarter of 1999, equating to an annual run-rate of $1.6 billion and accounting for 25 per cent of the company's total EMEA revenue.
