Notebooks To Get Savage

Quality fragging on the road got one step closer to reality Monday when S3 announced that it has successfully ported its Savage3D chipset to notebooks.

Dubbed Savage/IX and Savage/MX, the mobile graphics chipset will sport 16MB of memory, true 32-bit color rendering at resolutions up to 1600X1200, hardware DVD support and should be capable of pumping out "60 frames per second performance in most 3D applications including Quake II," the company said.

The chip will also include S3 Texture Compression (S3TC), which is supposed to deliver a 6X increase in image quality and will be featured in the highly anticipated games Quake III: Arena and Unreal Tournament.

There's use for the Savage/IX and MX besides games. The chipset is expected to be able to drive up to five monitors simultaneously for serious business presentations.

The biggest hurdle to bringing the chip to market was controlling the heat dissipation from the chip, as 3D accelerators tend to run extremely hot, the company said. The new chipsets'.18-micron design allows the chip to run at a 1.8 core voltage, dissipating less than 1.5 watts during full 3D operation.

Savage-based notebooks should appear in stores by September. Although still beta products, versions of the chipset shown to Maximum PC came within striking distance of performance projections. Expect to see the full skinny on the Savage/IX and Savage/MX in future issues of Maximum PC.
