Interesting to speculate why Washington hated riding a horse. I know he was extremely tall, so maybe riding a horse was uncomfortable - when his feet were on the stirrups his knees were up around his ears? Or maybe he just didn't like having the wind blow his wig around? Or maybe he had hemorrhoids?

Jefferson, who was noted himself for being a magnificent rider, said that Washington had the greatest seat in America. His taste for appearing mounted in the nick of time created the idea of "a man on horseback." Washington lost so many battles (but the last) that a good horse (and seat) was a necessity, not a luxury.
