Newsbytes - June 08, 1999 12:39

HACKENSACK, NEW JERSEY, U.S.A., 1999 JUN 8 (NB) -- By Steve Gold, Newsbytes. IDT Corp. [NASDAQ:IDTC]
has quietly acquired the exclusive patent rights to prepaid telephone calling cards across Europe.

According to the company, the move means that the firm will soon start collecting royalties on the concept from all prepaid
carriers operating in Europe, a plan that will undoubtedly ruffle a lot of feathers in the European telecommunications industry.

The move is an interesting one on IDT's part, and may signal a move towards taking out patents on telecommunications services.
In March of this year, Newsbytes reported that a Massachusetts-based firm, Cygnus, has acquired the global rights to callback
services and was preparing to either sell the rights to a third party company, or to issue sensibly-priced licenses to callback firms.

IDT has similar plans in the licensing arena. and says that it plans to act as a central clearinghouse for collecting royalties from
distributors of prepaid calling cards covered by the national patents corresponding to European application number 0572991.

Under the patent, IDT has obtained the exclusive rights to license the use of prepaid personal identification numbers (PINs) for
prepaid phone cards in Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Spain, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein,
Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, and the UK.

According to Howard Jones, IDT's chief executive officer (CEO), the patent also covers the exclusive rights to recharge prepaid
phone cards, as well as transfer balances between calling card users.

Jones said that he is looking forward to taking "full advantage" of all the agreement has to offer.

"We expect to work with existing and startup telecommunications companies using prepaid calling card technology, in addition to
continuing to sell our own branded calling cards," he said.

IDT is a relatively new entrant into the European prepaid card market, having only been selling cards for two years in Europe.
Despite this, the firm has carved out a healthy slice of the prepaid calling card market in the UK and France, as well as selling
co-branded cards elsewhere in Europe.
