By Gaston F. Ceron and Steven M. Sears

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Things were fairly quiet in the options market Tuesday, with volatility
rising as the stock market fell.

"Throughout the day, the market has been extremely quiet," said Jay Shartsis, R.F. Lafferty & Co.'s
director of options trading.

The option market's fear gauge, the Chicago Board Options Exchange's Market Volatility Index, or
VIX, gained 0.85, or 3.6%, to 24.32.

Still, the technology sector remained a pocket of activity, including call trading in International
Business Machines Corp., EMC Corp. and Dell Computer Corp. A senior trader at a major
securities firm said that people are starting to buy call options in leading technology names after
having sold some of them short.
