some would say you made quite a fascinating case for frugality, Bill. fortunately for society, the thrift system 'ain't broke' nor worried particularly about y2k. in my opinion, they are 'y2k' compliant because they are still a labor intensive workplace. they have filled a niche for years.

i found your commentary about the parallel price universe kind of time warp also intriguing. remember a few years ago when it became public knowledge that the clintons were deducting $50 per pair for Clinton's shorts and other sundry undergarments. i believe it was about that time that the government re-defined by some type of irs bulletin that donations had to be valued at basically thrift store or other second hand pricing outlets to qualify as a 'charitable deduction." seems to me that it was about that time that we all had to get a receipt for our donations if they were over xyz dollars in any given year.

after garage sales my wife holds, i have the distinct 'privilege' of counting the unsold items, multiplying them by 25-50c per and that is what i write down on our copy of the donation ticket. funny how easy it is to 'defend' this little system of mine at H.R. Block come tax time and i'm busy scrounging for schedule a deductions. surprising how all those donation receipts add up also.

must admit i've never thought of hospital thrifts as a place to look for upscale clothing. i will confess to looking at my closet with completely different eyes now that we are looking at a more frugal post y2k life experience.

i must confess that i donated a great many of my fancier shirts, an outgrown wide lapel tuxedo, several pairs of shoes, and all golf type shirts that didn't have a pocket. i've discovered my shirt pocket is an absolute must for keeping track of my scraps of y2k list information i seem to collect as i go about my daily life.

when i got through, my huge walk in closet consisted of about 24" of slacks, soft shirts, sweaters 3 church/wedding/funeral type suits plus a couple of basic blazers. even chucked all but a couple of my favorite neckties. while this may sound drastic to some, keeping warm in a northern winter is more important than fashion. thanks to your post, i now know where to go check out upscale clothing that fits should that need arise. i'm willing to wager the selection will be greater after y2k than it is now.

the thrift systems are going to be bulging as people have to move from their unpaid for, horrendously mortgaged homes with large closets and downsize to what they can afford. clothes will come flying out of those closets then. ditto color tvs, vcrs, computers which don't boot up, all kinds of kitchen gadgets that eat up too much wattage in a rolling brownout, or from a small gas powered generator.

speaking of generators, i just looked at your profile and noticed you have something to do with automobiles. i've already got my 5000 watt generator stashed and fuel stashed. i've been looking at second hand lawnmowers with the idea of hooking up some kind of car alternator gizmo like those fishing buddy generator? if so, maybe you could make a recommendation about alternators that could be run by a lawnmower motor?

the reason i'm asking is that i'm thinking of a couple of older people who really depend upon their breathing apparatus to make like more pleasant for them. surely there is some way i could make them one of those fishing buddy type generators to at least make their y2k transition more comfortable. have you seen any of those fishing buddy generator websites and their drawings from surfing the net?

anyhow, that's all for now. i'm enjoying visiting with you and learning from you in this forum.
