Regis:

I may be quibbling a bit here but the Neo Networks SteamProcessor (TM) 2400 Backbone Switch Router has a 16-slot chassis containing 512 GB (half a TB) switch fabric so I would call it a very high end GB switch. OTOH, the Netcore Systems Everest switch scales up to 2.5 TB so I would put it in the TB switch category.

Hey Regis,

great post.

Im not too familiar with the differences between the Juniper "Carrier-class gigabit group" (who is Asnd GRF, Torrent IP9000, LU packetStar, NT Versalar, CSCO 12000, and Netcore) and the other guys, the "Terabit Router" group which consists of CW's Aranea, Pluris, NeoNetworks, Avici (apparently waiting for NT to finally buy them), and Nexabit. This is the first time I have seen this described as such on SI. Thanks.

Now, if you wouldn't mind helping further, I have a few questions--

1.) Why have articles been putting the likes of Juniper/LU and people like Nexabit as some sort of DIRECT competitors?
Message 8713327

2.) When Sector Investor put up his post Message 9735902
it sure makes it look like these "carrier" class and "terarouter" people are in DIRECT competition. So, Im a little confused here. They all look like different variations of the same product, no? I guess I am just confused because you seem to be the FIRST person that I know of to come out and say the Juniper doesn't compete at all with any of the people in the "terabit" group. I certainly would like to hear more opinions on the differences between these groups...like I have said, there are pretty knowledgeable people here and in the ASND thread...I wonder why it's so difficult for people "in the know" (not me, of course ;-)to give reasonable opinions now. It seems many are blank right now.

3.) Can you give a layman's viewpoint on this difference between the "carrier class gigabit group" and the "terabit group" and why they don't compete???

4.)How does CSCO's 12000 stack up against the Juniper? I have wondered if it would be in CSCO's best interest to pick up MRVC (please, don't laugh) to get the optical/Aranea product line mix up and a bigger market share. I guess I still keep holding onto the thoughts that MRVC's intellectual capital (not marketing mind you, although its getting much better) was worth something to the likes of INTC or CSCO who would both benefit, imho, but in very different ways.

thanks muchas,
pigboy
