I think it's actually simpler than that. They like it. It makes them feel good, and since the tepid observance of a dessicated faith have left them few other avenues for self-gratification, they indulge. Evangelism is the spiritual equivalent of masturbation. They do it for themselves, not for us. I personally prefer the conventional method of masturbation, which is much less intrusive and much more respectful of the rights of others.

Quite seriously, Bob, you make a very interesting point. I don't think it applies to "ordinary" missionaries, many of whom are truly good, and generally level-headed people. And they usually know precisely who it is they are preaching to, and why. The phenomenon of self-appointed (and undereducated) missionaries, who preach at everyone and anyone within hearing distance, is quite another. And I think you have put your finger on something. Joan
