The quote tends to be misinterpreted; she was talking about her childhood home, long left behind (thus, no 'there' there). And it was definitely my current and your erstwhile home. SF with less fog and better rents.

I can't remember who to blame for that bit of supposed Stein trivia. I have no real interest in Stein, but the idea that the quote wasn't at all what it appeared to be stuck with me. I do recall that some other cultural notable whom Stein knew grew up in that Oakland housing project, and that it was in an eastern city, probably Pittsburgh. It was incidental to some essay I was reading. I should have paid more attention to the source or else not mentioned it.
