I was amazed at how well cs did today. I fled out of the market at the open and went all cash.
Doing ok this week with that strategy.
I may miss one but, oh well.
Smiles,
Glenn

Riley,
RE PAIR

I bought PAIR @ $21.50 a couple years ago. (too long to remember exactly) It went to mid $30's and I figured the hell with it, I am holding for $40. To make a long story short I rode the ups and downs all the way down. I still have it and I am convinced I will make a profit on it. (if I live long enough) (VBG) I think I should be the poster boy for "The don't fall in love with a stock association".

RileyDog, Thread, RE PAIR and DSL in general:

Had some interesting experiences on cable modems vs. DSL today. Starting to make me lean more towards DSL.

Been wired for cable modem, and just about to "pull the old trigger" on getting it installed. Earthlink as ISP, Charter as the cable carrier. Friend at work moves within two blocks of me, and I tell him we are within a couple of blocks of the phone switchboard, he should look at DSL because cable is,

$35/month for 56Kbps Up/ 256 Kbps Down.... no better than a modem up
OR $60/month for 128Kbps Up/ 512 Kbps Down
(Note that the downlink speed is not guaranteed during peak hours.)
$10/month fee or subscribe to basic cable, which is more
$19.95 Earthlink ISP monthly fee of course, Total Access 1,500 numbers nationwide
Cable modem lease or purchase $?
$49.95 set up fee

Total: $64.95 or $89.95 month plus cable modem lease/purchase, set up fee

Get home, watch the Grub fest, and Earthlink sends me an email to be a trial DSL member until end of July. Before they roll out their service they want some of us guinea pigs, and I'm already wired properly, ISDN, live blocks from switchboard, and heavy user. (Whatever, they want me! :-) )

$49.95/month guaranteed minimum 384 Kbps down (max of 1.5 Mbps) and upstream of 128 Kbps
(Note this is $14.95 during the trial for us guinea pigs)
19.95 Earthlink ISP monthly fee
Modem, DSL splitter, and NIC for $198.00 (waived)
set up fee $150.00 (waived)

Total: $69.90 plus modem, DSL splitter and setup fees

So which one would you choose? Obviously most people won't get the modem and set up fees waived. But if you assume purchasing the modems are about the same, the only difference is $100 in set up fee for better than the low end cable speed for $4.95 month more, and arguably better than the high end cable speed for $20.05 a month less (where in 5 months you recover the extra set up fee.)

Leaning towards DSL,

Waldeen
