I have netmedic installed on my system. With it you can see a graphic as to how much data is coming in through the modem.
With RT3 I could track on the order of 20 stocks and the bandwidth consumed would be around 35kbit, occasionally overflowing by 48k link when volume was significant.
With Qcharts I track the same 20ish stocks and the bandwidth is a nice low key 3-4kbit stream. The 1/10 is a crude approximation.

I dont have any idea what they do. They must sacrifice something in the process, though it could just be that they are smarter about only sending what data you need and in compressing it.

For example I'm convinced that RT3 would send the same data in multiple streams for each of the table based bid/ask, the LII, the bid/ask displayed in the LII, and the charts. Whew! How else can you get a situation where all 4 methods give you different #'s?
