ICG Selects Inktomi for High-speed Backbone Cache Deployment

Leading Backbone Provider to Build-In Increased Scalability and Performance with
Traffic Server

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 9, 1999--ICG PST, Inc., a subsidiary of ICG Communications, Inc.
(Nasdaq:ICGX - news), a leading competitive local exchange carrier, and Inktomi Corporation (Nasdaq:INKT - news), developer of scalable Internet
infrastructure software, today announced an agreement to enhance ICG's network backbone infrastructure.

Formerly Netcom On-Line Communication Services, ICG PST's integration of Traffic Server(TM) and Sun's carrier-grade Netra(TM) t servers will be
deployed to facilitate network build-out, provide premium quality of service to ISPs and prepare their network for traffic spikes caused by Net events.

''ICG PST's network backbone leverages the scalability and robustness provided by Traffic Server, running on Sun's Netra servers,'' said Jack Snavely, vice
president of Network Operations for ICG PST. ''The Inktomi/Sun solution improves the overall performance of ICG's network and provides our ISP
customers with the ability to offer a wide range of additional revenue-generating services.''

The Inktomi Traffic Server network cache platform will accelerate ICG PST's high-speed access while simultaneously improving the efficiency and
manageability of its network backbone in both large and small points of presence (POPs).

''Inktomi Traffic Server runs in many of the world's largest networks, and enables leading network providers like ICG PST to deliver differentiated
performance and services to their customers,'' said Paul Gauthier, chief technology officer of Inktomi. ''The proven combination of Inktomi and Sun
technologies provides a solid foundation to power the biggest backbones on the Internet.''

''Backbone providers require an open, flexible hardware architecture that allows them to quickly develop and deploy new services,'' said Neil Knox, vice
president and general manager of the Network Systems Group at Sun Microsystems. ''Sun's reliable Netra t servers feature a carrier-grade design and are built
on widely adopted industry standards, making them the ideal choice for ICG PST's deployment of Inktomi Traffic Server.''

About Sun Microsystems' Netra t servers

Sun's Netra t carrier-grade servers are NEBS-certified, providing the rugged and robust packaging needed in demanding service provider environments. The
servers run the same open, stable Solaris(TM) Operating Environment that is the frequently used in the telecommunications industry. Therefore, providers can
develop applications and services on any Sun workstation or server and deploy them on Netra carrier-grade servers without modification.
