Proprietary iron is iron that only let's you run one popular commercial OS. Open iron (x86/Alpha) allows you to run more than one popular commercial OS.

IT departments searching for true open systems should look for open iron first. This allows them the greatest flexibilty in the future use of that iron since they can pick/choose the OS. Iron is a commodity now.

"Proprietary iron" was coined by me ;)
