Wind River Systems Launches
Professional Services to Give Developers Competitive Edge
in Building Complex Embedded Applications

Industry Leader Offers Developers Single, Integrated Source for Software
Development Tools and Implementation Consulting

ALAMEDA, Calif., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: WIND - news),
the leader in embedded development software for the post-PC era, today announced its new
Professional Services Program to help customers bring products to market quickly while reducing
risk and cost. New developers with limited embedded experience, customers with demanding
time-to-market requirements, and clients building complex next generation embedded devices will all
benefit from this single, integrated source for the industry's leading development software and
high-caliber implementation expertise.

As more powerful microprocessors become available at lower prices, new opportunities to use
embedded technology arise -- both in traditional embedded markets and throughout the Internet.
And as the desktop and embedded industries converge, new types of developers are working with
embedded technology.

However, while the market for embedded systems is growing dramatically, the demand for skilled
implementation experts is significantly outstripping supply. Wind River created its Professional
Services Program to meet the increased demand for implementation consulting generated by this
surge of embedded software and dearth of embedded expertise.

''Wind River was founded with the goal of providing the products and services to help developers
build embedded devices faster and more easily,'' said Jerry Fiddler, chairman and co-founder of
Wind River Systems. ''By crystallizing the expertise we have built over the last 18 years into a
formal consulting service, we can help customers meet current and future implementation needs.
Based on the industry's growth rate, the increasing complexity of our customers' applications,
increasing time-to-market pressure, and the demand for expert installation, we anticipate
Professional Services will have a major impact on embedded market dynamics.''

To ensure the success of both the initial building phase of the Professional Services Program and its
long-term ability to meet the needs of the evolving world of embedded software developers, Wind
River selected professional services veteran Brad Murdoch to lead the program. Prior to joining
Wind River as director of professional services, Murdoch was general manager of the 600-member
global customer services unit for Unisys Corporation's South Pacific region, including Australia and
New Zealand. In addition, Murdoch has a strong background with complex installations and issues
relating to large client organizations.

''My team and I are looking forward to growing Professional Services into an invaluable part of
Wind River's offerings, on par with the top-notch Wind River software,'' said Murdoch. ''We have
access to hundreds of trained engineers who can assist clients on all phases of the product
development lifecycle. This includes every aspect of software design and implementation from device
drivers and firmware to GUIs and application development to on-going maintenance. Our goal is to
enable our clients to bring products to market more quickly by providing them with a complete suite
of services.''

By outsourcing embedded systems consulting, design, development and integration to Wind River
experts, customers not only get access to world-class embedded skills for implementing critical core
software but can focus the skills of their own staff on delivering value-add. In addition, Wind River
handles recruitment, training and resource management, giving customers the benefits of additional
specialists without the long-term commitment.

''Tornado(TM) and VxWorks® are used by the majority of developers in embedded software
technologies, but many companies need more than great software to beat the competition,'' said
Jacques Topping, president and chief executive officer of Informission, a Wind River-Certified
Professional Services Business Partner who is part of the Professional Services program.
''Companies need the type of experience you get after working with the same technology in different
environments, meeting different organizational needs, and working with different users. Wind River's
new program brings together professionals who have that background as well as strong vertical
market expertise. We are proud to be part of that group and look forward to helping more
companies build innovative products with Wind River technology.''

Wind River Professional Services

The Professional Services Program consists of Field Consulting Engineers (FCEs), who assist with
short-term projects; Wind River Global Consulting experts, for larger, more complex applications as
well as international projects; and a network of Certified Professional Services Business Partners
each with its own area of vertical market and development expertise. Each Wind River Professional
Service provider is tested and certified on the Tornado development tools and VxWorks operating
system. The new Professional Services Program offers an extensive range of services from
QuickStart assistance and on-site training through complete product development outsourcing.
Specific areas of professional services include consulting, design, development, integration, and
maintenance. Wind River currently has Professional Services delivery capabilities throughout North
America and Europe.

Wind River Systems Introduces
WindView for Automotive, First Embedded Software
Diagnostic Tool for Products Based on the OSEK Standard

New Visualization Tool Provides Unique Analysis and Debugging Capability
For Automotive Electronic Control Unit Software

ALAMEDA, Calif., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: WIND - news),
the leader in embedded development software for the post-PC era, today introduced
WindView(TM) for Automotive, the only software diagnostic and analysis tool that complies with
OSEK, the international standard for automotive electronic software. WindView for Automotive is
tightly integrated with Wind River's Tornado for Automotive Control and its OSEK-compliant
MotorWorks(TM) real-time operating system, providing software developers the most complete
platform for adding embedded technology into electronic control units (ECUs) within automobiles.

Based on Wind River's revolutionary WindView product and optimized for the OSEK standard,
WindView for Automotive is a diagnostic and analysis tool that provides detailed visibility into the
dynamic operation of an embedded system. Using it, a developer can quickly and easily visualize the
complicated interaction among tasks, interrupt service routines, and system objects in an application.
This information is presented and can be manipulated through a state-of-the-art Windows graphical
user interface.

''Before the introduction of WindView, embedded software developers could spend weeks or
months debugging a section of code by stepping through each line to find a programming error that
would lead to timing or performance problems. There was no way to verify the code's dynamic
behavior. WindView eliminated this problem and for the first time enabled developers to actually see
how their code performed. WindView for Automotive brings this power to OSEK-based products,''
said Curt Schacker, vice president of marketing for Wind River Systems.

The display and inspection of OSEK-specific objects is a necessity when analyzing in depth the
operation of OSEK embedded software. Developed in conjunction with 3Soft, a leading German
automotive developer of OSEK software, WindView for Automotive's visualization capabilities far
exceed those of conventional debugger solutions.

''BMW Group has played a significant role in the definition of the OSEK standard so we are
pleased to see Wind River including support for OSEK in such a valuable tool as WindView,'' said
Neil Robson, BMW Group tools manager. ''OSEK-capable tools will undoubtedly allow our
developers to more easily and efficiently examine and analyze the operation of the embedded control
unit software.''

OSEK Standard

The automotive industry today is faced with shorter design cycles driven by ever-decreasing time to
market requirements and growing market demands. In order to meet production needs and
consumer demands for emission reduction, fuel economy, onboard diagnosis, and cost reduction,
automotive companies are asking manufacturers and suppliers of electronic control units (ECUs) to
provide more functionality and an integration of previously individual components.

To address these issues a group of major European automotive manufacturers and component
suppliers defined the OSEK standard. The design objective for OSEK was to specify a product that
delivered the portability, scalability, vendor-independence, and productivity demanded by the
industry within the code size and performance constraints of deeply-embedded automotive
applications.

The full name for OSEK is OSEK/VDX derived from the German phrase for ''Open System and
Interface for in-Car Electronics'' and the French phrase ''Vehicle Distributed Executive.'' The
European Commission is currently proposing it as a required standard for automotive applications
and it is now being evaluated by many of the leading U.S. and Japanese manufacturers, establishing it
as the common world standard for this market.

WindView for Automotive will be available from Wind River Systems in Q3 of 1999. For additional
