mohan -
Yeah so everybody else should roller over and play dead?
That is not what I am saying at all - I am saying that AOL has developed a model which MSFT was unable to crack with a huge investment and control of the initial customer experience.

AOL has better retention of initial customers than anyone in the business.

I think this is a great marketing play by DELL (assuming it is not too expensive) but going into the provider business in today's market is not exactly the pioneering opportunity. It's like my yard in early spring - everything trying to grow like mad. Much of my work over the last 18 months is looking at opportunities in this space. Linked ISPs, free ISPs, free ISPs in Europe, free ISPs linked to HW sales, or paid out of number of downstream hits, or any of a thousand other schemes, are being funded by every VC in the business, as well as by individuals and companies who want a piece of the action.

mohan..."prodigy" once the darling of the unwashed masses..aol not an isp..

but they were not quick to change and adapt to market needs...aol fulfilled those needs...

also remember with an isp, you need a browser...two most popular are netscape(owned by aol), and msft ie(used by aol)...both will link you to the "aol community" if you desire for mail and instant messaging..so the browsers give exposure to aol...

remember "commodore"....and i don't mean the group led by lionel ritchie...they were the "computer"...but couldn't execute a "change in perception", when they introduced the amiga...

"perception" becomes "reality"....

can you saute the onions and hold them on the side?
