(BSNS WIRE)Alcatel Extends Range of SONET Access Gear to Address Packet to DWDM
Technologies

Business Editors
SUPERCOMM 99

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 9, 1999--As part of a full suite
of convergence solutions being introduced at Supercomm, Alcatel
(NYSE:ALA) is now addressing the full range of SONET metro convergence
from packet to DWDM (Dense Wave Division Multiplexing) functionality
through its expanding 1603 SONET product line.
Adding the Ethernet and ATM interfaces, Alcatel's 1603 line now
offers versatile and efficient data service transport, combined with
the traditional functionality and reliability of carrier TDM
equipment. Alcatel is also adding OC-48 DWDM optical transmitters to
the 1603 line to provide growing room for carriers adding new high
speed data services to their metro networks. The transmitters will
enable up to 16-channels of OC-48 DWDM which can be used with a
passive DWDM device to be implemented by a carrier, or coupled with
Alacatel's DWDM solution.
"Alcatel delivers carriers alternatives to maximize the
utilization and efficiency of their metro networks," said Bernie Assa,
Senior Marketing Manager, Alcatel. "We're offering a complete,
high-octane metro booster package with Ethernet LAN transport,
bandwidth savings enabled by ATM, and improved fiber usage and savings
via DWDM."
Alcatel's new data interfaces are designed to reduce equipment
costs. For example, multiplexing ATM VPs into higher rate DS3 or SONET
signals reduces the network bandwidth consumed and interconnect ports
to ATM switches or backbone networks. The 1603's integrated Ethernet
LAN interface saves on equipment costs at the end-user's premises. By
adding a new interface card to an existing SONET TDM-equipped 1603
element, carriers can seamlessly offer new services like native
Ethernet LAN transport. Using the 1603's unique ATM cell-router
technology, carriers efficiently use metro-ring bandwidth by
provisioning and transporting data traffic over virtual path (VP)
connections sized to each user's throughput requirements.
The 1603 family of SONET access systems includes the 1603 SE
SONET Extender, the 1603 SM SONET Multiplexer, and the 1603 SMX SONET
Multiplexer eXtra. These solutions provide compact OC-3 to OC-48
solutions that scale cost effectively to meet capacity requirements.
Alcatel builds next generation networks, delivering integrated
end-to-end voice and data solutions to established and new carriers,
as well as enterprises and consumers worldwide. With 120,000 employees
and sales of EURO 21.3 billion ($25.0 billion), Alcatel operates in
more than 130 countries. For more information, visit Alcatel at

enterprise-class product to offer an AAL2 -based voice solution that expands
by eight times the call capacity of a normal T1/E1 line. The AC 20 provides
the most scaleble, flexible and cost-effective solution for carriers
delivering managed voice and data services over ATM to enterprise customers.
Lucent also won with its customer, WorldPort Communications, the
Best-Built Network of 1998 award in the IP Services category. Lucent provided
WorldPort its industry-leading PacketStar IP 6400 Switch, enabling WorldPort
to bring a new type of differentiated service network to carriers, ISPs, and
corporate users -- a network that offers transmission of premium data,
voice-over-IP (VoIP), fax-over-IP (FoIP), Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), and
other multimedia applications with guaranteed performance.
The SUPERQuest Awards recognize the implementations of public and private
network solutions, and the key product/technology involved in those solutions,
that have advanced business for the customer.
Organizations were recognized in 12 categories. The competition,
established last year, drew more than 120 entrants and was judged by a panel
