It may be related to the Playstation more than anything else, but the Sony Electronics employee parking lot is always packed. Even late at night and on weekends. They clearly have a lot of work to keep people busy.

Sony Develops ''Open System'' DVD Video Encoding Utility; Sony's DVA-1100 Offers Compatibility with Daikin, Sonic Solution, and Spruce Technologies DVD Authoring Packages

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 9, 1999--Sony Electronics today announced the compatibility of the DVA-1100 DVD Authoring System with Daikin's Scenarist NT(TM), Sonic Solution's DVD Creator(TM), and Spruce Technologies' DVDMaestro(TM) systems.

The DVA-1100 allows facilities that already have an investment in authoring systems to improve their picture quality, using Sony's MPEG-2 encoding technology, as well as offering added flexibility of a high quality video stream to facilities interested in entering the DVD market in the future.

"This is yet another example of the creation of open systems designed to provide the user with the best quality solutions," said Michael Vitelli, Executive Vice President of Sony Electronics' Broadcast and Professional Company. "Authoring and mastering of DVD titles is emerging as a major growth industry, therefore Sony is pleased to be able to work with other manufacturers such as Daikin, Sonic Solutions, and Spruce Technologies to provide easy integration of encoded video material."

According to Tomoyoshi Ichioka, Senior Vice President of Operations for Daikin U.S., "Daikin shares the same philosophy as Sony when it comes to open architecture. Scenarist DVD authoring tools are designed to be compatible with all DVD MPEG 2 encoders. We are excited that the leaders in DVD technology, Sony and Daikin, are able to work together to provide the industry with the highest quality DVD authoring solutions."

Sony's DVD encoding system and Encoded Media Transfer Utility will be demonstrated at REPLItech, at booth number 2028 in the South Hall of the Moscone Center.

"Sony's long experience makes their video encoding products a valuable option for Spruce customers as they grow their facilities," said John Shike, Spruce's Director of Business Development. "Users can take advantage of that video quality when creating feature-rich, interactive DVD, DVDROM, and hybrid WebDVD(TM) titles using Spruce authoring systems including DVDMaestro and DVDConductor(TM)."

"With more DVD production systems installed than all others combined, Sonic is committed to open tools that offer our users the greatest level of flexibility," said Mark Ely, Director of Product Marketing for Sonic Solutions. "We are pleased to be working with Sony to ensure compatibility with their video encoding utility and our DVD Creator authoring system."

Sony's DVA-1100 DVD Authoring System includes the capability to export MPEG-2 encoded video that has been compressed using the DVA-V1100 Video Encoder for use in other, non-Sony, authoring packages that customers may already be using. By providing these capabilities, Sony allows facilities that already have an investment in authoring systems to improve the picture quality they can provide at a cost comparable to other high-end encoders.

"Sony has years of experience in video compression and we have used that experience to create MPEG-2 encoding chips that employ algorithms that are the product of that experience," said Anthony Gargano, Senior Vice President of the Communications Systems Division for Sony Electronics' Broadcast and Professional Company. "The result is an encoded video quality that is readily apparent to the viewer and that can help producers differentiate their titles from the hundreds available to the consumer today."
