I responded to a Yahoo poster on GBICs. He was apparently concerned about some of the misinformation being spread on that board. In case some of you are interested in some good graphics and definitions, I will repost it here - omitting the part about me not being an engineer, since most of you know that from my SI profile:

My understanding of problems with GBICs is that the frequent problems encountered relate to the media type (copper versus optical). Copper is inherently noisier and intended for much shorter distances. They are also two different types of copper GBICs that have different cabling requirements.

For the purposes of being an informed investor, it is important to know that Ancor does not make GBICs. There are only four manufacturers and Ancor is not one of them. When you buy an Ancor switch you can buy it with optical, copper, or no GBICs. On their old web pages they used to give you the price per port differential with these three options.

Fibre channel experts do a good job of combining both copper and optical GBICs on the same SAN. A good example would be the article in this month's InfoStor entitled; "Performance characterization of large FC-AL loops, part 1." You can read a summary of the article that I posted over on SI. Basically the copper media was used to connect disk arrays at very short distances (6->30m) and the optical media was used for the longer loop of 30km. Optimal performance as Read bandwidth at 50m was 93 MBytes/sec.

Clearly, all the components work well. This experiment was done by an academic lab with no company affiliation.

As an aside, I believe the most recent GBIC meeting just occurred in Minneapolis and was hosted by Ancor.
