Do you know anything about this MOT chip? Is this the BlackBird that they announce a while back? Motorola unveils new digital cable chip CHICAGO, June 9 (Reuters) - Telecommunications company Motorola Inc. on Wednesday unveiled a new chip to be used in set-top boxes that receive digital cable and other information, a product that it says will lower the cost to develop the boxes. The chip combines separate functions that decode video and Dolby digital audio, process advanced graphics and provide interfaces to a PowerPC processor and other devices, the company said. Because all the functions are integrated into the chip, called MCF40001, fewer chips are required, and the time to design and implement the system is reduced, Schaumburg, Ill.-based Motorola said. This results in an overall reduction in development costs, streamlined design, and faster product delivery to the marketplace, the company said. The MCF40001 is $19.50 each for 500,000 units or more. Separately, Motorola said the 300-millimeter semiconductor wafer being developed at its Dresden, Germany, joint-venture with Infineon Technologies, can now be used to produce more useable chips than could be produced on a 200-millimeter wafer. The 300-millimeter wafer, the next generation of silicon wafer that forms the base of computer chips, is now showing yields of more than 60 percent in tests, the company said. That means the wafer yields 145 percent more working chip content than the 200-millimeter wafer, the company said. Being able to produce more working chips will potentially lower computer prices and would also mean more profit for the companies Infineon is part of Germany's Siemens AG (quote from Yahoo!
