bp, while there is a lot of truth to moore's "law," the dynamics of the pc industry are changing. performance improvement just isn't as meaningful as in the past. a doubling of 286 performance was MASSIVE. a doubling of pii 400 performance is BLAH except to a few relatively small niche markets.

if people are so concerned about performance, why is the low end growing at many times the high end (is the high end growing or would contracting be a better adjective?).

improved performance is expected. i'd argue at the same or lower cost. especially when the proposed mfrs are already losing money - BIG MONEY.

this is the age of the good enough pc. the 286 wasn't it. nor was the 386 or the 486. early ps were close. late ps and early piis are good enough for 85% of everyone that needs a pc. why pay more for something you don't really need? oh, and that will be outdated in a year or two anyway?
