From TheStreet.com:

...
Jim Seymour: I enjoyed your story on Portland. It
tells those socialist, free-loading, tree-hugging
populists in Portland that they cannot have socialist
broadband access in a capitalist system.

The issue here is not access to the cable pipe. The
issue boils down to who controls the first page and
who establishes a relationship with the customer.
@Home is emulating an America Online-like
(AOL:NYSE) business model, and AOL is now
panicking. Wait until Yahoo! (YHOO:Nasdaq) gets
its quick link button on @Home's first page.

Have any of the guys in Portland ever asked the
question "How many times can I get on to the
Internet once I have signed on?" You can only sign
on once and then you surf from there. @Home is
providing the access and content. If I don't like that
content, then I'll go to AOL and pay for its content. I
might pay several times for content when I want to
view a site like TheStreet.com, but I only pay once
for Internet access. The issue here is not Internet
access; it is of who controls the first page!
