My normal page draws about 20-40k, consistent with your figure. A symbol change spikes it up to about 500k.

Now imagine having to do that symbol change through a 48k link while the normal 20-40k is running. Loading a new symbol can take a full minute, sometimes even five!. During this entire time and for quite a while afterwards *all* the data on your screen is very likely wrong.
