QKSAND,

The article that I referenced in my preceding post talks to some extent about how some of the service providers (Bell Atlantic and CAIS) are exploring this space, along with some hotel chains and casinos.

I don't see any reason why some of these products and services couldn't be leveraged for SOHO business purposes as well, and they probably will be, or already are.

Except that business features and functionality are sometimes radically different and more demanding than those which are used for leisure purposes only. At some level appliances tend to look like either business or personal, but not both, except in those instances when the are used for business entertaining purposes? I'll leave off with that note.

Bernard,

The EIA/TIA standards also recommend the use of Cat 5 for residential structure wiring, or in-home use, for the higher speeds. Fast Ethernet (100 Mb/s) and ATM-155 (155 Mb/s) must use Cat 5, although one may be able to gamble and get away with lesser grades, as you say, when short distances and other environmentally friendly conditions prevail. But for the couple of extra pennies, there is no good reason to gamble when putting in new. FWIW.

Regards, Frank Coluccio
