VeriSign Introduces Go Secure!(SM) Service for Microsoft Exchange

First Offering in New Family of Managed Application Services Enables Secure E-mail Deployment within Days

June 9, 1999 12:00 PM
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- VeriSign, Inc. VRSN , the world's leading provider of Internet trust services, today announced VeriSign Go Secure!(SM) for Microsoft Exchange, the first in a new suite of managed application services that can dramatically accelerate the way organizations of any size deploy secure e-commerce applications. VeriSign's new Go Secure! family of services enable enterprises to easily and rapidly incorporate digital certificate-based functionality into their messaging, VPN, and web access applications. The combination of these new plug and play services with VeriSign's managed digital certificate and PKI service, VeriSign OnSite, gives IT and line-of-business managers everything they need to secure their mission-critical applications virtually overnight.
With the introduction of VeriSign Go Secure! for Microsoft Exchange, VeriSign enhances its Exchange offering enabling more than 25 million users of Exchange to now seamlessly acquire and use digital certificates for secure e-mail. This revolutionary plug and play approach seamlessly integrates into the existing Exchange architecture. In contrast to other secure e-mail alternatives which require installation of additional and proprietary client or directory software, Go Secure! plugs VeriSign's managed security services directly into the existing Exchange application. This new application service makes secure messaging easy to deploy, administer, and use as there are no additional IT infrastructure changes required.

"VeriSign allows enterprise customers to easily integrate VeriSign's PKI with the secure messaging infrastructure that Exchange Server and Outlook provide," said Dave Malcolm, Microsoft Group Product Manager for Exchange Server. "VeriSign's integration with Exchange makes it easier for companies to deploy mission-critical applications such as secure e-mail, and to be trusted by other organizations over the extranet."

How it works

Go Secure! works with existing Outlook 98 and 2000 desktop clients and supports Exchange 5.5 servers. Certificate requests are automatically approved using the users' Windows NT logon credentials. This seamless process makes it easy for administrators to deploy Exchange security to a large number of users. Go Secure! allows for automatic publishing of OnSite issued digital certificates to the existing Exchange global directory and the automatic retrieval of certificates for encrypting and signing of sensitive e-mail messages. It also includes tailored support and implementation services, administrator set up guides, and end user tutorials. Combined with VeriSign's highly scalable OnSite service for digital certificates, this new Go Secure! Service ensures quick and easy deployment of secure e-mail virtually overnight.

"Go Secure! Service for Microsoft Exchange resolves the crucial scalability, interoperability and ease-of-use issues that until now have hampered the widespread deployment of secure e-mail within large enterprises," said Richard Yanowitch, executive vice president of marketing for VeriSign. "With the release of our new suite of Go Secure! Services, VeriSign has taken an important step forward in making it easier for enterprises to achieve the benefits of PKI, in order to meet the rapidly growing need for secure business-to-business and business-to-consumer communications."

VeriSign also announced today its plan to join Compaq Computer Corporation's Business Solutions for Exchange (BSE) program, which works with leading software vendors to promote their solutions on Compaq platforms for Microsoft Exchange Messaging environments.

"Our work with VeriSign provides Compaq with the opportunity to expand its market leadership with Microsoft Exchange and enhance the security solutions we offer our customers," said Lex Dekkers, Director of Messaging and Collaboration Business Unit, Compaq Computer Corporation. "VeriSign's Go Secure! Service for Microsoft Exchange is a natural fit with our commitment to the Exchange server market. This solution enables customers to meet their security needs as they work to leverage their investment in Microsoft Exchange."

Go Secure! application services can utilize and interoperate with the world's largest network of digital certificates compatible with the VeriSign Trust Network (VTN). Enterprises benefit because VeriSign's technology is already deployed in virtually all major Web browsers and e-mail clients. Because these so-called root keys are widespread, IT managers can enable secure communications throughout the enterprise as well as with external partners and customers without worrying about client software incompatibility.

The family of Go Secure! Services integrate with existing enterprise applications to enable seamless deployment of secure e-commerce applications without disrupting current desktops, network devices, directories, or application servers. In the coming weeks, VeriSign will be announcing significant additions to the suite of Go Secure! Services. See today's accompanying press release titled "VeriSign Launches Revolutionary Go Secure!(SM) Services to Accelerate Large-Scale E-commerce Deployments."

VeriSign OnSite -- Industrial-Strength Enterprise PKI

VeriSign's integrated, managed service approach to securing e-commerce applications makes it easy for enterprises to simply plug digital certificate-based security into their existing application infrastructure and quickly realize the benefits of secure e-commerce. VeriSign's Go Secure! Services further extend the value of VeriSign OnSite, the unique, fully integrated, state-of-the-art PKI service platform for the enterprise. OnSite provides the fastest time to market and lowest cost of ownership when compared to proprietary PKI software alternatives and meets all of the requirements of today's enterprise networks.
