I wonder how many online traders a full-service broker would need to break even? Most of the banks and brokers have been so slow to enter this market, they may never be profitable in it. They will be saddled with high infrastructure costs to spread over too few customers, as well as high-cost brick and mortar customers. Then there will be the complaints and defections of the brokers themselves, who will view it as money out of their pockets.

Maybe the independent investment advisors will be winners in this (as well as E*trade, Schwab, and a few of the other strongly-positioned firms in this area).
