Q2 PC shipments expected to be strong

The number of PCs shipped worldwide this quarter is expected to grow 21.3% over last year's second quarter, according to new figures from International Data Corp. (IDC).

Strong global consumer demand led by the surging Japanese market and healthy U.S. buying will continue to drive growth in the second quarter, IDC said. However, the second quarter's PC shipments should decline 2.3% worldwide from the year's better-than-expected first quarter.

The U.S. market should expand 3.5% over the first quarter and 28% over last year's second quarter, IDC said.

Japan -- which expanded faster than any other major market last quarter -- is staying on track, IDC said. The market there should grow 36% over the same quarter last year, due in part to an increase in Internet demand.

The Asia/Pacific region, excluding Japan, should show significant recovery this quarter with a 22.6% growth rate over the same period last year. However, political unrest in India, Indonesia and Malaysia -- along with declining relations between China and the U.S. -- could inhibit growth in those areas, IDC cautioned.

Consumer interest in inexpensive PCs, the Internet and a sound economic picture will continue to drive the PC market in Western Europe for a second-quarter increase of 13.7% over the same quarter last year.

IDC expects Dell Computer Corp., Gateway Inc., IBM and Apple Computer Inc. to perform well this quarter. Dell, Gateway and IBM are increasingly focusing on the small and midsize business markets with targeted programs and products designed for that segment. Apple, with its upgraded notebook product and increasing sales volumes in overseas markets, should also turn in a good quarter. And Hewlett-Packard Co. is poised to improve its volume of shipments, IDC said.
