I will admit that the fact the analyist purchased the stock for his own portfolio is very disconcerting (for longs) and wrong (should be illegal).

I don't know about disconcerting, has nothing to do with the value of the shares or the company, however, I do agree that it is wrong and should be illegal for the guy writing that kind of analysis to own the stock. I also think that J Charles should have a policy not allowing their analyst to buy shares of a company before they release that kind of recommendation. After the market response, however, I see less of a problem.
