OT: DVD

Good points, Piranha. With my Cel 300A running at 300, I see some performance problems. Running at 450, it's a good bit better, and is even better than the decoder card's output to the monitor. The lack of quality in Creative's Encore passthrough cable prevents me from using it, that's why I need the software decoder solution. If I had a better passthrough cable like the Voodoo2 cables, the loss of quality probably would not be noticable. But since the DVD cable is female/female, I couldn't use my V2 cable. :( (Note that if you have both a V2 and a DVD passthrough cable connected, your PC will look like it's having bypass surgery.)

I haven't played any DVD games yet, but there will be 2 types: games with DVD video and those without. Tex Murphy is a game with DVD video and I imagine it overlays CGI over the video, making it too CPU-intensive to do both DVD decoding and run the game engine. Some games will come out on DVD just for the increased storage capacity. Those should work fine, of course.

If all you're planning on doing with the DVD is using it for movies viewed on the monitor and an occassional non-game software (like Natl Geographic) I'd stay away from the decoder card. The decoder card is good for TV-out, since you do not care about the passed-through output from the video card. You might see what it would take to purchase one at a later date. (Or maybe you could buy mine!)

I've also heard rumors of a new DVD format coming out sometime soon (yeah, right!). I doubt anyone would want to wait for that, though, since the initial prices would be too high and there would be little software for it.
