fyo - <At least until AMD can counter with a .18mu process of their own. (err... of Moto's, that is :)).>

Actually, I am continually told, much to my amazement, that AMD will have TWO .18 process, Al in F25 (AMD only effort), and Cu (MOT) in F30. For a company like AMD to undertake a dual development effort blows my process boy mind.

fyodor,

"It seems to me that people are underestimating CuMine somewhat. . All indications are that it will be about 10% faster than a PIII in SPECint and SPECfp"

I am assuming the similar performance from CuMine that you mention - so I do not believe I am underestimating CuMine. The odds are that should be easy for K7 to beat especially on the FP/3DNow angle. Also in AMDs favor, AMD is supposed to have been working on a K7 with L2 targetted toward 180nm - that couldn't be too far behind CuMine. So, bottom line: the concern is execution - not performance of the K7.

"As for the MHz race... All indications are that Intel will have .18mu out several months before AMD. "

As for MHz: I am not sure how much that will buy Intel in the early stages. One thing though - process guys say that Intel 0.25 was significantly superior to AMDs w.r.t. performance and I do not know if that remains that way with 180nm.

As for 180nm: Once upon a time I thought that Intel had a significant lead - now I am not sure anymore. Have heard rumors to the contrary and Atiq is on record for saying 180nm will be up this quarter.

To reiterate, the issue now is that of execution - and has been that in the recent past.
