That is an excellent question. Technically, Red Hat doesn't really make that much $$$ off of selling Linux itself. It makes most of its cash off of support and consulting, as far as I know. Yet they do sell Red Hat Linux 6.0 on their web site for $79.95 now, so you've got to wonder if they don't make at least a pretty good living off of the "free" software alone.

Either way, if I was a dedicated Linux volunteer, I would want to "get mine" sooner or later. And if I wasn't, I wouldn't want to continue programming for free.

Hi, TOA! So far, the other respondents have answered the question you pose reasonably well. From talking with Red Hat as well as reading the trade "buzz," the company has tried to make it clear in the marketplace that it is not trying to make money off Linux but from consulting and providing services. You don't even have to get Linux from Red Hat to contract for the company's services in keeping all the changes up to date and providing applications.
