Net stocks have long way to grow, says FBR analyst

The hot Internet IPO market may have cooled a bit, but analyst Rob Martin expects Net stocks to end the year on a high note. Among his top picks are CNET and Preview Travel.

You cover a variety of companies in e-commerce, enabling technologies and content in the Internet sector. What are your favorites at the moment?

Our top pick for the year -- and it has been since the beginning of the year -- is RealNetworks (RNWK). The stock has been under a bit of pressure lately with the overall sector, but it remains up over 100% so far this year. RealNetworks is a fundamental, back-end, enabling infrastructure for audio and video on the Web. If you look at that from a franchise perspective, they have 60 million players. And 85% of the content providers use the Real platform, which creates a pretty compelling value proposition.

That is good to hear. RNWK is holding up pretty well while the market drops. Seems like there are buyers out there at this level.

Is it a contradiction that the CTO of Netradio uses REAL because it has the "dominant market share", but then uses Linux over NT because it's "not reliable" (seeing as NT is obviously "dominant")? I guess he brought the question back to quality, something I'd like to do on this board. I'm starting to hear from people that Quicktime is indeed a lot more "reliable" than the Real Player. Is that true?
