In my view PA sees human talent as a major component to building out his vision. Savoy of VV, Russell of Go2Net, Bob Whitsitt is a 'mature boy wonder' who heads the Portland Trailblaizers and Seattle Seahawks, the head of Mercata is a former VV employee tasked with creating a blockbuster idea. With the exception of sports teams, PA has not shown the necessity to buy 100% interests. Even in the case of the teams, he leaves decision making to others. I believe it is part of a strategy to allow young, very talented people to use their creativity to excel. He is building a team of aggressive, motivated and creative individuals and supplying them with the tools and resources to pursue their 'wildest dreams'. Mercata looks to be a nice fit because it gives a unique shopping experience for cable subscribers, provides eyeballs and stickyness to Go2Net and gives a boost in the quest to become a Top 10 site by year end.
