Re: "a good way to groom a successor"

A good leader always should be striving to grow his own replacement- or on the lookout for one .. keeping an eye towards the future always so that he takes care of his duties to the continuity and prosperity of his command...

groom a successor
If there were changes, and I don't think there are, planned, I would expect Mort to be the first to retire.

nolimitz...re: " successor? "

thanks the input, i think any "blind faith" investor in dell, must face reality, that dell today is not the dell of yesterday. a great company, but the "greater" you become, the harder it is to achieve and be rewarded for what becomes expected of you. you reward a puppy when you house break him, but an old hound is expected to do what he has learned and performs on a daily basis.

"mikey" should be highly visible, why?...because of a shift in direction of the world to a future hi tech driven society, which will thrive on instant voice and data communication. to be purely a down stream hardware manufacturer who is dependent on the r&d of strategic partners, relegates one to the position of an extremely efficient assembler. nothing wrong with this, still an extremely profitable niche, but you become "perceived" as something a bit more "plain" then what you truly are. "direct from dell" uses the buzz words, but everybody has read the book, now it's a "been there, done that", reaction...markets and business always looking for fresh..."mikey" too young to become a philanthropist while still at the helm of the ship....ibm, hwp, t have convinced the markets they are no longer "plain"...and the perception becomes reality...as andrew grove recently said, investment in new direction, makes that direction viable....two choices, love dell as it is and settle for normal stock price, or "mikey" proving himself as the ceo he was, that "led" the company to where it is...in business as in life, if you want to continue to grow and achieve, you can't spend time on stating what you have achieved...that is the obvious...
