Having thought about this for a half day, nytimes.com I've decided that it is neither good nor bad news. Intel sees the need to cut costs (no surprise there; their SVP wants 30%). The equipment manufacturers sound pleased, but that seems a mirage. One fellow from VLSI said "You get many more chips per wafer, and the revenue stream is based on the number of chips that can be made." My conclusion is a little different: upgrading your plant does nothing to the top line, just the bottom line. Place your bets as before. One note: according to the AMAT thread, the company 'tabled' 300mm development, announcing same on their latest cc. Interesting that the two companies cited as supplying Intel in this context were Nikon and SVGI.. -mb
